Chapter 15: When Krakauer wetn back down the Thumb he stayed in his tent for about 3 days. During that stay he smoked some marijuana and burnt his tent down. We learn that Krakauer is one of 5 children. Ever since Krakauer was little his dad wanted him to have a career in medicine snf hr hsd to get astonishing grades to get into Harvard just like his dad wanted. Krakauer basically threw his dads wishes out the window and became a carpenter and a climbing bum. HIs dad came down with Polio. His dad had to take fistfulls of pills everyday. His dad then tried to commit suicide and was addmited into a psyciatric hospital. When Krakauer started climbing back up the weather forced him to retreat back down. He made a mistak though because he stayed on a steep flank and a giant snow storm came. He then decided to move from this mistake to try to find his camp. He realized he was acting like an idiot because he knew he was never going to find it so he dug a hole and stayed in there till the storm passed. Once it passed he started climbing back up the Thumb. He made it to the top this time and took a few pictures to make sure the people knew he did it and went back down. All the people in Petersburg didn't believe that he climbed Devil's Thumb. He went back to his hometown and started back up with his jobs.

Chapter 18: Krakauer talks about how he thinks Chris died. Some people believe he had mistakenone plant for another, however after eating wild potates for months successfully it seems strange that he would mix them up with the wild pea plant. Krakauer was convinced that it was because he ate the seeds of the wild potato and didn't know that they were posionous. The toxins in the potato make it so that no matter how much you eat you starve to death. A rather painful and ironic death, but people claim that you don't feel the pain after awhile of being deathly starved. We also review his final notes which also indicate that he felt no pain or anguish until the very end where he finally wrote a SOS to anyone who might stumble by as he was, consequently, out looking for berries. In his final note he makes it seem like he died happy and satisfied with what he had done. This is where Chri finally expired.

Epilouge: The final pages of the book tell us of how Walt and Billie visit the bus via helicopter. Krakauer says that they did not weep and that Billie actually looked forward to taking the trip. Once they arrived and took in the surroundings they both agreed that it was a reflection on Chris that he stayed in such a beautiful place. When inside the bus, they see his writing, toothbrsh, and other personal items that he had left behind. They then place a plaque on the bus and leave a case full of first aid, food, and other survival supplies in the bus for somebody else to use so they wouldn't die out in the wilderness. In the end it seems that Chris died happy and that his parents now know how and where he died as they helicopter flies out of the woods.
